Hearing Resources

Cost of Hearing Aids

There are many components that contribute to the costs of hearing aids. They include the time and expertise of the Audiologist, such as the initial fitting and follow-up visits that are necessary for the proper fit of the hearing aids. Advantage Audiology will verify that the hearing aid fits properly and is comfortable, ensure that it is programmed for your hearing loss and communication needs, and make any necessary adjustments to ensure your satisfaction. Costs also include the hearing aid technology and the research and development which helped to design these sophisticated devices. Learn More

Buying Hearing Aids Online

In the past few years, many organizations have begun to offer Hearing Aids and/or Personal Sound Amplification Products (PSAP’s) online. The introduction of hearing aid sales through the internet has raised many concerns and questions. Of critical importance is that these devices must adhere to the current U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations as well as to state requirements for the sale and dispensing of hearing aids. Consumers must understand their rights and also be familiar with the laws that are in place to protect them. Learn More

Hearing Aid Expectations

When first purchasing hearing aids, it is important to have realistic expectations regarding what hearing aids can and cannot do. Hearing aids cannot restore normal hearing. Hearing aids can amplify sound and have features that can reduce background noise and make some sounds clearer, but they cannot make us hear like we used to. As we get older, our brain’s ability to process the sound in the environments around us becomes more difficult, especially when there is background noise such as in a restaurant. Another reason we cannot restore normal hearing is that, as we lose our hearing, our brain adapts to the lack of sound. When we reintroduce sound, we need to allow time for the brain to re-adapt to this new information. This can occur over several weeks or several months, is a very individual process, and can vary depending on the individual. At Advantage Audiology, we will work with you during this time to address any concerns or problems you may have, and make adjustments if necessary. Learn More

Tinnitus Information

Tinnitus is the perception of a sound that is unrelated to any external sources of noise. It can be perceived in the ear or in the head. Tinnitus can be described in many different ways, may be in both ears or one, and may fluctuate in volume and pitch. Tinnitus may or may not be associated with hearing loss. It is recommended that patients who experience tinnitus have a complete evaluation done by an ear doctor and audiologist. Learn More

Types of Hearing loss

Hearing loss can be described in many different ways. Depending on the type of hearing loss you have, it may be temporary or permanent. There are several degrees of hearing loss that range from mild to profound. At Advantage Audiology, we can test your hearing to determine what type of hearing loss you have and what the severity of the loss is. Sometimes hearing loss can be treated medically by a physician, and other times the best option is assistive listening devices or hearing aids. Learn More

Aud vs. HIS

You will see that some places employ Audiologists, as is the case with Advantage Audiology, and some employ Hearing Instrument Specialists/Dealers (HIS/HID).
