According to one 2017 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5478790\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">article<\/a>, \u201cHemoptysis is defined as the expectoration of blood, alone or mixed with mucus, from the lower respiratory tract. There are generally three categories for hemoptysis:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Scant hemoptysis, which refers to a very small amount of blood, like streaks in your saliva and mucus.<\/li><li>Mild to moderate hemoptysis, which refers to about half a cup of blood.<\/li><li>Massive hemoptysis, which refers to about a quart of blood.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what-causes-hemoptysis\">What Causes Hemoptysis?<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>There are many potential causes of hemoptysis, some of which are more serious than others. Potential causes include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Infection, such as pneumonia, bronchitis, tuberculosis or fungal infection.<\/li><li>Certain medications, usually blood thinners like Coumadin (warfarin), Eliquis (apixaban), Plavix (clopidrogrel) and Xarelto (rivaroxaban).<\/li><li>Cancer.<\/li><li>Pulmonary embolism, or a blood clot in the lung.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-is-hemoptysis-diagnosed\">How Is Hemoptysis Diagnosed?<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>In order to diagnose the underlying cause of your hemoptysis symptoms, your health care provider may perform the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Physical exam.<\/li><li>Blood count lab testing.<\/li><li>Coagulation studies.<\/li><li>Chest X-ray.<\/li><li>Computed tomography (CT) scan.<\/li><li>Bronchoscopy.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-is-hemoptysis-treated\">How Is Hemoptysis Treated?<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>The treatment for hemoptysis depends on the underlying cause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Infections are treated with antibiotics or anti-inflammatory medications.<\/li><li>If your hemoptysis is caused by your blood thinners, your physician may instruct you to stop the medications for a time.<\/li><li>Cancer is managed with surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy or a combination of these treatments.<\/li><li>Pulmonary embolism is treated with blood thinners, though this can cause further bleeding.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes, for severe bleeding, a procedure may be necessary, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Bronchoscopy.<\/li><li>Bronchial artery embolization.<\/li><li>Surgery.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re experiencing hemoptysis, you should see a provider right away to ensure it\u2019s not caused by something life-threatening. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For more information or to <a href=\"https:\/\/advantageent.com\/contact\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">schedule an appointment<\/a> about your hemoptysis symptoms, call Advantage ENT &#038; Audiology today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[related-posts]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you are coughing up blood, it is known as hemoptysis.
