Their groundbreaking work<\/a>, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, uncovers the cellular chaos unleashed by excessive noise: an overflow of free-floating zinc in the ear that leads to hearing loss and tinnitus. The study shows our inner ear cells are damaged not just by the loudness of noise but by this mineral concentrating in the inner ear after exposure to loud noises.
